Disparity Lab

Mission

The Disparity Lab, led by Dr. Sojeong Nam, operates within the counselor education program in the College of Education and Human Sciences at The University of New Mexico. The lab's primary focus is on conducting empirical research aimed at addressing mental health disparities among underserved and underrepresented populations.

The Disparity Lab adopts a comprehensive approach to mental health disparity, targeting both individual and systemic levels to address the various determinants influencing mental health outcomes and related service utilization patterns. By examining factors at multiple levels, including individual, interpersonal, community, and systemic factors, the lab aims to gain a holistic understanding of the complexities surrounding mental health disparities. This approach allows the lab to identify and intervene at various points along the continuum, from individual-level interventions to broader systemic changes, in order to effectively address the root causes contributing to the creation and perpetuation of mental health disparities. Through its multifaceted approach, the Disparity Lab strives to enact meaningful change that promotes equity and access to mental health services for all individuals, particularly those from underserved and underrepresented populations.
